Terra Braatz graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh with a Master’s Degree of Science in Education. She is the supervisor of EAP and in charge of contract management and corporate consultation. As a licensed professional counselor and nationally certified counselor she sees individuals, couples and families struggling with a wide variety of mental health concerns. She has previously worked with inmates in need of specialized mental health treatment and crisis management. She also enjoys providing services to a diverse university student population.

Who is EAP Services?


EAP Services is New Zealand’s leading provider of Employee Assistance Programmes. It is a 100% New Zealand owned and operated private company with offices in all major cities and regional centres. Employers that choose to have a contract with EAP Services can then allow their Employees and immediate family/whanau to seek support from EAP Services as and when they need to.

What is an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)?


The Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) is an employee benefit, fully funded by the Employer and intended to assist Employees to understand and overcome a broad range of life and work issues in order to remain focused and productive when at work. The core services available through the EAP are Counselling and Legal, Financial and Career advice. All services are completely confidential and focus on enhancing the individual’s mental health and general wellbeing. The EAP also provides crisis intervention and consultancy services to support Employers in their duty of care for their Employees.

Are EAPs cost-effective?


Employee Assistance Programmes (EAPs) are implemented with an expectation that the benefits to the business will include increased productivity, reduced sick leave, healthier and happier workplace relationships and lower staff turnover – all such benefits subsequently leading to increased profitability. Research indicates usage of the EAP can have a significant positive impact on personal and work functioning and can produce a Return on Investment (ROI) of between 5-16 times the Employer’s investment. However, in order for any Employer to assess the return on investment of their EAP, there must be usage of the EAP by its Employees and measures in place to evaluate such usage vs sick leave, productivity, performance and engagement.

Employers have a duty of care to provide both a physically and psychologically healthy and safe workplace environment. They acknowledge that sometimes their Employees are too overwhelmed by personal or work matters to perform at their highest level. The EAP is a tool for Employees to be proactive about addressing those issues. The benefits for the Employer include happier and healthier Employees, reduced sick leave, lower staff turnover – all which will result in increased productivity.

Will anyone at work find out I'm going to EAP?


One of the main barriers to using an EAP service is the uncertainty or mistrust around privacy and confidentiality. It is critically important therefore that you have complete confidence that, whilst your Employer pays for the service, they have no insight into specifically who has accessed the EAP or the reasons why. EAP invoices only ever refer to an EAP client file number and never state the name associated with that number. You may have to ask your Manager for permission to attend an EAP session if it has been scheduled during your work time.

What services does the EAP provide?


The EAP provides a brief number of sessions with a qualified and experienced professional who can help you with your emotional concerns and create a plan to cope with or overcome a broad range of life and work issues. If you are looking to improve the quality of your life, or whenever there is anything that interferes with your happiness or prevents you from achieving your goals, we may be able to assist you.

Why might an employee or their family/whanau access the services of the EAP Programme?


The EAP Programme is focused on providing support to understand and overcome a broad range of life and work issues that someone may be struggling to cope with. The EAP service is also funded for immediate family/whanau, as Employers acknowledge that what goes on in the personal lives and the lives of those nearest and dearest to their Employees can also have a significant impact on their Employees. The EAP programme provides the opportunity to talk things through with a qualified experienced counsellor. Sometimes someone wants help but they don’t know why - they just know that they are not happy, or things are not ‘right’ for them. EAP counselling can help relieve the emotional pressure, clearing the way to focus and decide what to do next.
There are many reasons why someone may wish to take advantage of the EAP services. Examples are when you are:

  • feeling overwhelmed by the demands of balancing work and family
  • experiencing stress, anxiety or depression
  • dealing with grief and loss
  • dealing with conflict at work or at home
  • needing assistance with children or elder care concerns
  • wanting legal or financial advice
  • at crossroads in their lives
  • concerned about gambling or alcohol/other drug abuse for themselves or a family member

Is the EAP confidential?


Yes, EAP appointments are completely confidential. EAP Services understands that your trust in the confidentiality of the EAP is crucial to its success. No information about your participation in the EAP programme is provided by EAP Services to your Employer, unless we have received your signed authority to do so. EAP Services has robust procedures and sophisticated technology in place to ensure the safeguarding of your privacy and all personal information. We are fully compliant with both our legal and ethical obligations regarding confidentiality.

Who answers when I call EAP on 0800 327 669?


When you call and select the option for a booking enquiry, your call will be answered by a Support Co-ordinator in our National Support Centre. All Support Co-ordinators are employees of EAP Services and their role is to schedule you an appointment with the Professional who best fits the support you require. We provide a successful match in most instances however if, after your first EAP session, you feel the match isn’t right for you, then let us know and we will reschedule you to start your programme again but with a different Professional with whom you may feel more comfortable.

What are the qualifications of the counselling professionals?


EAP Services’ require all counselling professionals to be qualified, with a minimum of 5 years’ one-on-one counselling experience, and have current registration with their respective professional body in New Zealand. Registrations may include: NZAC, DAPAANZ, NZAP, NZPB, ANZASW, SWRB. All counselling professionals are required to have regular supervision and adhere to the professional codes of ethics.

What legal services does the EAP provide?


Our Legal Advisors are qualified Solicitors and this service is for those seeking legal advice about a personal matter, i.e. we don’t provide legal advice in relation to any employment matter. The information and guidance provided is limited to high-level, general guidance that will provide you with clarification and direction from a legal standpoint.
Some of the most common reasons the EAP is accessed for Legal Advice include:

  • Relationships (e.g.: pre-nupts; separation; property; custody of children, etc)
  • Estate planning (e.g.: Powers of Attorney, Wills, Living Trusts, etc)

What financial services does the EAP provide?


Financial Counselling is about much more than just ‘money’ and our Financial Advisors can give practical advice and tools in a relaxed and easy-to-understand manner to help you achieve and maintain ‘financial wellbeing’. Our Advisors are impartial in their recommendations and the information and guidance they give is aimed at helping you to resolve and/or improve your financial situation.
Some of the most common reasons the EAP is accessed for Financial Advice include:

  • Kiwisaver Investment – what’s right for your income and circumstances
  • Budgeting & debt management
  • Planning for your retirement
  • Trusts – pros and cons
  • Saving for the future
  • Managing credit

Where do I go for my EAP appointment?

Many people still prefer to attend their EAP sessions in person, however there are other options that may better suit and can be discussed with our Support Co-ordinator at the time of booking your appointment.


In-person
Confirmation of your scheduled appointment will include the address where you will be required to attend your EAP session.
Telephone
Telephone sessions are a great way to conveniently talk with your EAP Professional from wherever you happen to be. Some people request a Telephone session to be scheduled for when they are sitting in their car at lunch time or for when they get home from work in the evening. Confirmation of your appointment will include your phone number, which our counselling professional will know to call you on at the commencement of your scheduled session.
e-Counselling
e-Counselling is often preferred by those who may have a hearing impairment or for whom English is not their first language. There are 2 options for e-counselling: Live Chat or Web Journal.

  • Live Chat is where you are able to see and talk with each other in real time and in a secure virtual in-person setting.
  • Web Journal is where you are set up with a login to a secure portal where you can send a document outlining your situation. This is then securely transmitted to a Counsellor who will post their response to you back through the portal within 48 hours, i.e. not real time. You will always be able to log back into your account and read all the messages posted by the Counsellor. This can help you to remember and reflect on the guidance and input that you receive.

How do I know if and when I need Counselling?


Many people contact us when they are not sure of whether they need EAP support or even perhaps why they might need it. We do advise that the earlier you ask for EAP help the better, so we encourage you to get in touch with us when things first start to worry or trouble you. Everyone copes with different things in different ways, so please don’t ever feel that you’d be wasting EAP time or that others may have a ‘greater’ need than you. Everyone’s reasons for contacting EAP will be treated as valid and we know from many decades of experience that even just one EAP session can bring relief and comfort to many people. It’s not too different from making an appointment to see your Doctor when you have a physical ache or pain. Often, we delay asking for help, thinking that the problem may go away, or that we can just “put up” with it. Talking to a qualified EAP professional is a progressive and positive part of taking care of yourself and enhancing your overall wellbeing.

How many EAP sessions can I have?

The number of sessions can vary from one person’s programme to another. Some people feel they have the tools and support after 1, 2 or 3 sessions and others may require a few more sessions. The EAP Professional working with you will plan a programme of sessions designed to reach an agreed outcome. They will assess your progress from one session to the next and manage all appointments up to the intended completion of your programme.

What if I need more Counselling support?

Sometimes people accessing EAP support are facing particularly difficult or complex situations and the support they require extends beyond the scope of the EAP. In those circumstances we will advise you as to your options for obtaining longer term counselling support, which will then be outside of the employer-funded EAP service.
